The silence of the library was usually a comfort to Ben, but today it felt oppressive. The soft glow of the lamps seemed dull and lifeless. He felt a deep-seated resistance to everything. The plans were set. His art show, or his friend’s camping trip. On the same day.

He barely glanced at the open book in front of him, his eyes unfocused. He slumped lower in his chair, the weight of the book feeling burdensome. He didn't want to think, to read, to do anything.

He rubbed his temples, a dull ache throbbing behind his eyes. He wished he could simply vanish into the pages of a book, to escape the impending day and all its demands.
