The bustling city noise seemed to amplify the silence inside Chloe. The crowded street blurred as she walked, the familiar sights now alien. Reaching out for something, anything familiar, she looked at Ben. His response to her story of their childhood was a blank stare, a polite, "Oh, I'm sorry. I don't remember any of that." She felt a sudden chill, a sense of detachment. She couldn’t seem to get enough air into her lungs. Every shared memory, every inside joke, every secret whispered under the stars was utterly gone. She wanted to scream, to lash out, but all that came out was a shaky breath. She wanted to go home and just lie down.
