Gemotions

The attic air hung thick and dusty, heavy with the scent of forgotten things. Sarah dragged her feet across the creaking floorboards, each step a monumental effort. Boxes, piled haphazardly, seemed to leer at her, demanding attention she didn't have. Another family inheritance to sort through. Sighing, she reached for a cardboard box labeled "Grandma & Grandpa - Memories." Inside, nestled amongst brittle tissue paper, was a photograph. In it, her grandmother, known for her prim and proper demeanor, was laughing hysterically, mid-dance with a man who was decidedly not her grandfather. A jolt, like ice water, ran through her.

Her throat felt tight. She knew her grandfather had been a stoic, hardworking man, a pillar of the community. That was the narrative. Now, staring at the photo, she felt a profound sense of disorientation. The carefully constructed history she'd always accepted felt suddenly fragile, like spun glass threatening to shatter.
