The invitation felt heavy in Elara's hand, like a damp stone. Another obligation. Another performance. The gold script of "Congratulations, Mom & Dad!" blurred slightly as she stared at it. She hadn't slept well in weeks, the anxieties of her own life a constant hum in the background.

She ran a hand through her hair, a simple gesture that nonetheless felt like a monumental effort. The party was in a week. The speech, she knew, was expected to be heartfelt and amusing. The thought of feigning enthusiasm made her stomach churn.

Her gaze drifted to the stack of bills on the kitchen counter. Rent was due, again. The car needed fixing, again. She felt the dull ache behind her eyes, a familiar throb that intensified with each passing day. The words, the jokes, the obligatory smiles… they all felt like lead weights she would have to lift.
