The announcement had come during a seminar, Dr. Ramirez’s voice brisk and efficient. Maya felt a coldness spread through her limbs. Her hand instinctively reached for the worn leather of her notebook, the familiarity offering no comfort. She had barely managed to finish her coffee this morning, and the thought of another meeting left her feeling like she was moving through treacle.

She felt a strange disconnect, like she was watching herself from afar. Her research, the countless hours in the library, the sleepless nights – all felt suddenly uncertain, threatened.

The other students were chattering amongst themselves, but Maya was mute. She kept her head low, the words "He's leaving" echoing in her mind. Her gaze drifted to the window; the vibrant autumn colors felt muted and dull.
