The air conditioning hummed incessantly, a white noise that did little to soothe the tension knotting in Javier’s shoulders. He stood in the middle of his living room, the eviction notice clutched in his sweaty hand. He scanned the room, noticing dust bunnies dancing in the sunbeams. The sight only added to the burden. He slumped onto the sofa, the cushions offering little comfort. He stared at the blank television screen, the emptiness mirroring the one inside him. He felt hollow, drained of any will.
