The relentless thumping of the music seemed to vibrate within Clara’s very bones. She slumped on the sofa, her shoulders hunched. The simple act of breathing felt like an immense effort.

She imagined the scene next door: the laughter, the dancing, the carefree joy. It felt like a cruel joke. She, on the other hand, was struggling.

With a deep, shaky breath, she rose to her feet, her body aching with the effort. She needed to take some action, even if it was just to ask them to be a bit quieter.
