The aroma of freshly baked bread, usually a comfort to her, now felt cloying and oppressive. Sophie’s sister, Olivia, was becoming a Scientologist. Sophie gripped the edge of the kitchen table, the wood digging into her palms. She wanted to scream, but the words wouldn't come.

She stared at her sister, trying to read her expression, to find some clue, some reassurance. Her sister's face was calm, serene. But Sophie felt… a chill.

She thought about her sister changing, about the beliefs and practices, which she knew so little about. She wondered if she'd be able to connect with Olivia anymore. She felt a growing sense of… loss.
