The vibrant, chaotic strokes of the drawing felt like a punch to the gut. The image of “Clank,” her niece Daisy's new friend, was nearly identical to the figure that had dominated her childhood. Leo's face, usually so sunny, turned strangely pale. She felt a cold dread creep up her spine.

She abruptly turned away from the drawing, unable to look anymore. She walked to the window, staring out at the garden. The flowers, usually so cheerful, seemed to mock her with their beauty. Her hands were trembling.
