He replayed the argument in his head again and again, each iteration twisting the knife deeper. Now, standing here, he was certain she would never forgive him. The silence of the shop magnified the echo of his mistakes. He gripped the worn leather of his jacket.

The ring. He knew, he just knew it would be here. He had to fix this, he had to make things right. It was a matter of life and death, even if his body wouldn't allow him to believe it. He had spent his last funds, and he had to borrow from someone he did not trust, for what he hoped would provide a better future.

The shopkeeper's eyes narrowed as he approached. He'd been watching him for a while. He could practically taste the judgment, and that was the last thing he needed. He felt his face flush, and heat bloom throughout his body. He’d made a mistake, a mistake he was now on the brink of repeating.
