He avoided eye contact with the shopkeeper, his gaze fixed on the ring. He took a small step forward, then another. His movements felt slow, sluggish, as if he was wading through water.

The ring. He was almost certain. He just needed to see it, up close. He felt the familiar ache in his temples, the tightening of his jaw. He had rehearsed this in his head a dozen times, but he'd forgotten all the lines.

The shop felt small, claustrophobic. Each breath was a struggle. He had to be strong. He had to remain steady. He had to get this ring, no matter the cost.
