The boarding gate felt like a pressure cooker. Amelia paced, the worn linoleum tiles of the terminal floor reflecting the sickly fluorescent lights above. She checked her watch again, the polished silver face mocking her with its relentless ticking. The wedding was supposed to start in two hours. Her sister, Sarah, was finally getting married, and Amelia desperately wanted to be there.

“Ladies and gentlemen, we are experiencing a further delay due to… unforeseen circumstances.” The loudspeaker crackled with the announcement. Amelia clenched her fists. Her flight, already postponed once, was now pushed back another two hours. A knot of unease twisted in her stomach, making it difficult to breathe.

She imagined Sarah, radiant in her dress, waiting at the altar. Her heart ached at the thought of missing the vows, the first dance, everything. Grabbing her phone, Amelia frantically texted her sister: “Stuck at the airport. Running late. Hope you’re okay. Love you.” The message, though full of affection, felt inadequate, a mere whisper in the vast space of her absence.
