He adjusted his tie for the tenth time in as many minutes, the silk feeling suddenly too tight around his throat. Liam felt a churning in his stomach, a physical manifestation of his apprehension. He’d hoped, truly hoped, that she wouldn't be here. The seating chart, a neat little rectangle of potential disaster, had been a cruel joke.

He spotted her across the room, laughing with a group of people. The sight made his palms damp. He took a long, slow sip of his water, trying to compose himself. Every cell in his body screamed at him to flee, to disappear into the anonymity of the crowd.

His gaze flickered back to her. She looked stunning in a sapphire dress. The memory of their last conversation, a shouting match punctuated by slammed dishes, flooded his mind. He swallowed hard. The wedding band began a new song, and the upbeat tempo suddenly felt like a taunt.
