He’d been increasingly distant, and her heart felt heavy. She would catch him staring at his phone, a strange, unreadable expression on his face. She watched him now, his back to her, murmuring into the device, pacing the narrow hallway of their small apartment. She began to chew her lip, the taste of blood mixing with the lingering taste of coffee.

She felt a hollowness in her stomach. A dread, subtle but persistent, had begun to gnaw at her peace of mind. He was going to start to hang out in the garage again, she just knew it.
