He slammed the door of his car shut, the sound echoing in the deserted parking lot. The argument with Emily had left him physically drained. They were talking about the night of the accident. She’d said he was drunk, irresponsible, had caused it.

He remembered her getting behind the wheel. He remembered trying to stop her. He remembered her face, contorted in anger. He scrubbed a hand across his face. Why didn't she remember? The conflicting versions of events created a vacuum, a hollow space inside him. He felt disconnected, adrift. He felt cold.
