The photograph, faded and creased at the edges, lay on the table between them. They were looking at it together, trying to piece together the details of the forgotten holiday. Mark spoke of a sunny beach, of carefree days spent swimming and laughing. His voice was warm, filled with fondness.

She felt a chill, a deep, unsettling unease. She remembered the downpour that had lasted for days, the cramped hotel room, the endless arguments. The image in the picture did not match the way she saw it. She felt a shiver run down her spine as if someone had walked over her grave. Her chest felt heavy.
