He pulled out his phone, re-reading the email for the tenth time. “Congratulations, David. You are transferred to the Security department.” David felt a tightening in his chest. He was a writer. Security? What would he do?

He stared at the blank page on his computer screen. The cursor blinked. The words wouldn’t come. He got up and paced his office, the floorboards creaking under his weight. He always found comfort in writing. Now that comfort was gone.

He ran his hand through his hair, a nervous gesture he hadn’t noticed he did. His heart raced. Security protocols, surveillance, these were foreign concepts to him. He sighed.
