She found the note taped to her door – a single sheet of paper with the words scrawled in hurried handwriting. A party that was supposed to be a celebration of her achievements was now, apparently, not happening. Her carefully curated outfit felt suddenly too bright, too expectant. A tremor ran through her, starting at her fingers and spreading upwards. She pressed her hand to her chest, feeling the frantic beat of her heart against her ribs. She sank onto the floor, the world tilting slightly. Everything she’d planned for, all the anticipation she’d carried, seemed to evaporate.
