"No, no, no," she muttered to herself, staring at the phone. Her fingers, usually steady, fumbled as she tried to call her best friend. The message tone was cold and repetitive. She replayed the conversation in her head. She had meticulously organized every single detail, and now, nothing. The colorful balloons she'd painstakingly inflated now seemed to droop. The realization settled over her like a heavy cloak, stifling and oppressive. She felt a sudden urge to pace, to do something, anything, to dissipate the building tension.
