The silence in the break room was deafening. Alex stared out the window, the city a blur of movement below. He'd overheard a conversation between two of the other engineers, and the implications were staggering. Ben, who had been hired six months ago, was somehow on a higher pay grade.

His knuckles were white as he gripped the edge of the table. He felt a sudden, inexplicable anger. The injustice of it all, the feeling of being overlooked, was overwhelming.

He needed something, anything, to distract him. He reached for a stale donut, barely noticing the taste.
