The sudden silence in the kitchen was the first thing that alerted David. He'd been humming along to the radio while making dinner when his wife, Sarah, had abruptly stopped chopping vegetables. He turned, a wooden spoon still clutched in his hand, and saw her staring at him. He swallowed hard.

Her expression was unreadable. She spoke, her voice flat, “So, you've been working on your Mandarin, I see.” David's heart pounded in his chest. A bead of perspiration trickled down his temple. He had a sneaking suspicion that his carefully crafted lie about late-night work meetings was about to unravel.
