The harsh fluorescent lights of the office seemed to amplify the silence. Michael found himself staring at the notes on his desk, unable to concentrate. He kept replaying the scene from last night in his mind. He had been walking by his girlfriend, Anya's, open door when he heard her speaking fluent Russian.

He hadn’t known she spoke a word of it. His mouth felt dry. A feeling, like a cold hand, had wrapped around his heart. He felt a desperate need to know what she was saying, who she was saying it to. He leaned back in his chair, suddenly exhausted.
