Eliza stared at the article on her phone, her fingers trembling as she scrolled back up the page. Her meticulously crafted plates, hours of prep, the delicate balance of flavor and presentation – all dismissed as “pedestrian” and “uninspired.” Her throat constricted.

She slammed the phone down on the counter. The familiar scent of garlic and thyme, normally a source of joy, now felt oppressive. She wanted to scream, to shatter something. The rhythmic clatter of dishes in the back seemed to mock her.

She found herself replaying the critic's words in her head, each phrase a fresh wound. She sat down heavily, the energy suddenly drained from her. The grand opening, the culmination of all her dreams, felt like a distant, unreachable memory.
