The announcement on the website of *Spice Route* flickered, taunting. His chest felt constricted. His appetite, usually robust, had evaporated. He couldn’t even bring himself to think about food.

He slumped in his chair, staring out the window. The city, usually vibrant and alive, appeared muted, gray. The familiar rhythm of the street outside his window had lost its appeal. He pictured the rich colors and smells of the restaurant—the spicy curries, the fragrant rice, the warm naan.

He pushed his chair back, a low groan escaping his lips. He picked up his coat. He needed air. He needed… something.
