He kept fiddling with the thermostat, even though the house was already warm. Mark hadn't slept well since moving in, waking up with a sense of unease that clung to him like a shroud. This feeling was familiar, a ghost of childhood fears he thought he'd outgrown. He rubbed his arms, his gaze drawn to the study's wall.

It was the fifth time he had walked past the bookshelf. Its ornate carvings, usually appealing, now seemed to press in on him. A subtle shift in the shadows, a barely perceptible change in the pattern of the light falling across it, had caught his eye. He touched the seemingly solid wall.

A section moved inward, revealing a gap. A room. A space he hadn’t known existed. His breath escaped him in a rush, a silent gasp. He fumbled for the light switch, finding it unresponsive. The darkness beckoned. He took a hesitant step toward the opening, his heart hammering against his ribs.
