The back of the diner was quiet, only the hum of the fridge. Liam sat in the booth, the leather wallet lying open on the table. It was jammed with cash, and he'd discovered it in the glove compartment of his car.

He’d always been a cautious man. Now, the weight of the unknown pressed down on him. What should he do? He fiddled with the straw wrapper, twisting it into a tight spiral. The waitress had taken his order, and when he looked up, she was staring at him.

Her gaze was not accusatory but inquisitive. Liam felt his face grow hot. He suddenly felt exposed, trapped under her scrutiny. He found it difficult to breathe.
