Michael paced his tiny apartment. The air felt thick, difficult to breathe. He’d ordered the DNA test on a whim, fueled by curiosity about his heritage. The results had landed a day ago, and he hadn't slept since. The words “biological parents” echoed in his mind, replacing the familiar comfort of his childhood home.

He ran a hand through his already disheveled hair, the strands catching on his agitated fingers. He imagined a different life, other relatives. The thought was strange. He suddenly felt a sense of disorientation, as if the ground beneath him had shifted. His usual confidence had deserted him.

He picked up a framed photo of his adoptive parents, smiling and holding him as a baby. He felt an intense wave of loyalty. He set the picture down carefully, as though handling something fragile.
