The sunlight streaming through the window seemed to intensify the dust motes dancing in the air. Michael shifted in his chair, a nervous tick returning to his eyelid. David’s announcement about a dog had taken him completely by surprise. He’d pictured them, the two of them, in their cozy little apartment, just the way they were, always.

His throat constricted. He hated change. He ran his hand through his hair, leaving it a mess. The idea of a dog, shedding, barking, needing constant attention, was a tight knot in his gut.

"I’ve already found a golden retriever puppy," David was saying, his voice buzzing with enthusiasm. "He's adorable." Michael stared at the wall, wishing he could rewind time.
