The email arrived at precisely 9:03 AM. A coldness washed over Amelia as she read the subject line: “Important Company Update.” Her fingers trembled slightly as she clicked the link. The words swam before her eyes: "acquisition," "synergies," "transition."

She pushed away from her desk, the sudden movement causing her chair to scrape harshly against the floor. She needed air. Her mouth felt dry, her throat tight.
