"Everything alright, Alex?" His boss's question snapped him out of his reverie. He jumped, his heart leaping into his throat. He forced a smile, but it felt wooden. He had to project an image of calm, but inside, a chaotic storm raged. The possibility of the promotion felt both exhilarating and terrifying.

He’d avoided eye contact with Emily all morning, a subtle avoidance strategy. He knew she was just as capable, just as determined. The internal competition was brutal. He ran his hand through his hair, leaving it standing on end. He was not himself.
