The elevator doors opened, and Liam found himself facing Mark. His colleague smiled, a broad, friendly expression. The smile, however, did not reach his eyes. Liam's stomach churned. He suddenly remembered the time Mark had found the secret spot where Liam was practicing his guitar.

He mumbled a greeting, his voice tight. He gripped his briefcase, his knuckles white. The elevator ride, normally a minor inconvenience, now felt like an eternity.

Every conversation that he had had with Mark replayed in his head. Would Mark remember the talent show, and Liam's lackluster performance? He was desperate to be anywhere else.
