Gemotions

The attic air hung thick and dusty, catching in Amelia's throat as she pulled the box toward her. Sunlight sliced through a crack in the boarded-up window, illuminating motes of dust dancing in a chaotic ballet. Inside, nestled amongst moth-eaten blankets and forgotten toys, she found it: a brittle, yellowed envelope, her mother's precise handwriting scrawled across the front. “Personal – Do Not Open.” Her breath hitched.

She sat on the floor, the rough wood digging into her legs. The phrase “Do Not Open” became a mantra in her mind as she traced the lines of the faded ink. What was inside? Why had her mother never sent it? A coldness spread from her stomach, a creeping unease that made her skin prickle. She cautiously slid the aged letter out.

It was a draft resignation letter. Dated 1988. The signature at the bottom, her mother’s maiden name, was elegant and firm. The words, however, spoke of a life unfulfilled, of dreams deferred. Amelia’s hands trembled, the paper feeling fragile as ash. A wave of nausea rolled through her, the attic suddenly feeling much too small.
