The letter had been blunt: "Removal complete." Michael ran his hand through his hair, a nervous habit. The simple words had sparked a deep disquiet within him. He'd rushed to the spot, his mind racing.

He arrived and his breath caught in his throat. Where the majestic sequoia had been, there was only a flat, empty space. His jaw tightened, and he felt a sudden urge to turn around and run.
