"Are you sure this is the right place, Dad?" Sarah asked, her voice small. Her father, John, remained silent, his gaze fixed on the spot. He’d driven them for hours to see the old oak.

He stopped the car and got out. The oak was gone. The shock registered in his face, his complexion had suddenly gone very pale. He looked around.

He turned slowly in a circle, as if searching for something he had lost. His shoulders slumped, and he took a shaky breath. His hand reached into his pocket and clutched his car keys.
