The flickering candlelight cast dancing shadows across the room, making it hard to focus. I kept fiddling with the signet ring on my finger, a nervous habit I'd developed as a child. My sister, Olivia, was across from me, her face unreadable. We hadn't seen each other in years.

The lawyer, a stern woman with a severe bun, began to read. "For Mr. Finn, a small, inherited cottage in a remote location, a collection of old books, and a handful of shares in a struggling brewery." A cold dread washed over me.

I gripped the table.

“And for Miss Olivia?”

"Miss Olivia receives the family vineyard, the majority shareholding in a successful wine company, and a considerable sum of money.” Olivia's lips curved into a predatory smile. I felt a tremor run through me.
