The grand, old house felt cold, despite the crackling fireplace. I was seated, stiffly, next to my brother, Samuel. The air was heavy with unspoken words. We had never been close.

The lawyer, a frail man with a trembling hand, began to read. "For Miss Charlotte, a box of old trinkets, a collection of vintage clothing, and a small savings account." I felt a hollow emptiness. I’d always felt like I’d been left out.

My gaze flickered to Samuel.

"And for Mr. Samuel?"

The lawyer adjusted his glasses. "Mr. Samuel has inherited the family estate, several lucrative investments, and a substantial portfolio of stocks and bonds." Samuel’s lips curved into a smirk. My fingers curled into fists.
