The house. There it was, displayed on the screen, looking… different. Cleaner, newer, somehow less *hers*. Claire’s breath caught in her throat. She found herself scrolling through the listing again and again, as if the repetition would somehow change the reality.

She’d been so careful to avoid this. The town was a place she avoided. Yet here was the house, a blatant reminder of the past. Her hands were ice cold. She rubbed them together, trying to generate some warmth, but the chill went deeper than skin. The phone rang, startling her. It was her mother, calling as if she knew.
