The realtor’s words, "charming fixer-upper," now felt like a cruel joke. Sarah’s stomach churned as she stared at the official document detailing the previous owners. The address – *her* address – was listed in bold, black ink on a police report, the details of a brutal assault unfolding beneath. She slammed the file shut, a tremor running through her hands.

She paced the length of her living room, her breath catching in her throat. The sunlight, previously a welcome comfort, seemed to mock her with its normalcy. Had someone bled out on this very Persian rug? She pressed her palms against the cool glass of the window, needing a grounding sensation, a connection to the outside world.

"This is ridiculous," she muttered aloud, trying to inject some steel into her voice, but it came out a strained whisper. Every creak of the floorboards, every rustle of leaves outside now felt like a whispered threat, a prelude to something terrible.
