The DNA test results lay open on the kitchen counter, the stark black ink a constant reminder. Sarah’s hands, normally steady, now trembled as she re-read the percentage. Half-sibling. The words hung in the air, heavy and significant. She felt a sudden, inexplicable chill.

She wrapped her arms around herself, as if trying to ward off the cold. The house, usually a sanctuary of warmth and familiarity, felt strangely empty. Her gaze drifted to the framed photos on the wall – her family, her life, her history. Now, everything had shifted.

She got up and walked aimlessly around the house, stopping at the bookshelf, at the piano. Everything seemed different, tainted by this new revelation. She found herself staring out the window, looking at the world outside, but seeing nothing.
