The afternoon sun, usually a source of comfort, felt oppressive against her skin. She had been driving around for an hour, delaying the inevitable. She’d tried to convince herself she could simply cancel. That it wouldn’t matter.

But it did matter.

Finally, she pulled into the parking lot, the gravel crunching under her tires, the sound grating on her nerves. Her hand trembled as she reached for the door handle.

The thought of opening up, of being vulnerable with *him*, filled her with a sense of dread that stole her breath.
