The letter arrived, a stark white envelope among the usual bills. He recognized the typeface instantly. The homeowner's association. His breath hitched as he opened it. The subject: “Excessive Noise.” His eyes scanned the words, a knot forming in his stomach.

He dropped the letter onto the table, the paper fluttering slightly. He couldn't bring himself to look at it again. He pushed away his plate, suddenly losing his appetite. He felt a throbbing sensation behind his eyes. He got up from his chair, aimlessly wandering through the house, unable to settle.
