She found her hands clammy. The phone call with her neighbor, Mr. Davis, had ended minutes ago, but the echo of his stern voice still reverberated in her ears. She felt a burning sensation in her cheeks. He'd been very direct, almost accusatory.

She looked at her reflection in the window, her features tight, almost distorted. She ran a hand through her hair, attempting to smooth the strands. She felt the urge to pace, needing to expend the excess energy coursing through her body. The air inside the room seemed suddenly thick and close.
