The flickering porch light cast long, dancing shadows as Martha peeked through her curtains. Mrs. Gable, next door, was loading what looked like a vintage Rolls Royce with suitcases. Martha's hands, usually steady, trembled slightly as she clutched the floral fabric. The car! It had been there for a week now, parked discreetly behind the meticulously manicured hedges. She couldn't shake the sensation that her stomach had dropped to her toes.

Yesterday, Martha had overheard Mrs. Gable on the phone, her voice a melodious cadence, speaking about “the Riviera.” Martha had almost choked on her morning coffee. Now, seeing the car, the luggage… it felt like a silent judgment, a chasm widening between their modest lives.

Martha retreated from the window, finding it difficult to breathe, a tightness constricting her chest. She absently rubbed at the worn patch on her sofa, a habit she performed when distressed. The monthly bills sat on the kitchen counter, mocking her with their demands.
