Gemotions

The clinking of champagne flutes drifted over the fence, accompanying the faint strains of classical music. He could see them, silhouetted against the patio lights, laughing and toasting each other. He felt a deep, uncomfortable ache in his gut.

He had promised his daughter a trip to the zoo next week, something he'd been looking forward to for months. But, looking at the neighbor's party, their expensive clothes, and their carefree revelry, he felt a crushing sense of inadequacy.

He retreated inside, the silence of his own home amplifying the sounds of the celebration next door. He felt a sudden, sharp pain in his chest, and he gripped the countertop for support. He needed to get away from the party.
