"Are you serious?" Mark demanded, his voice tight. He was on the phone with his sister, relaying the news. He ran a hand through his hair, which was usually neat and tidy but had now fallen loose.

He ended the call and tossed his phone on the kitchen counter. The ceramic made a loud clack. The announcement in the hallway, now taped to the refrigerator, seemed to mock him. Everything was set. Now, this.

He wandered into the bathroom, staring at his reflection in the mirror. He looked pale, almost ashen. The prospect of starting over, of the financial burden, of the uncertainty, pressed down on him, heavy and suffocating.
