Daniel paced his dorm room, his steps short and agitated. He’d seen the announcement on the university’s newsletter. His essay, the one about his complicated relationship with his older brother, had been chosen for publication.

He ran a hand through his hair, pulling at the roots. His stomach churned. It felt like a violation, a forced exposure of private family matters. He felt a burning sensation behind his eyes.

He stopped pacing and stared at the wall, his chest constricted. He wanted to shout, but the words were trapped in his throat. He felt exposed, vulnerable, and more than anything, deeply regretful. He wanted to take it all back.
