"I'm joining the Church of Scientology," Mark announced, his voice brimming with a newfound energy. His mother blinked, her face slowly turning pale. His sister, Emily, was the one who reacted. Her shoulders slumped slightly, she felt a profound sense of exhaustion wash over her.

Emily had always been the “responsible one,” shouldering the burdens of their family. She’d meticulously planned her career, cared for their ailing grandmother, while Mark had drifted. His announcement felt like a final declaration of his own disregard.

She stared out the window, watching the leaves swirl in the autumn wind. The sky was a cold, indifferent grey. She felt a similar coldness in her own heart, a feeling that she was nothing more than a discarded object.
