The news felt like a punch to the gut. Peter, his son, was becoming a Wiccan. His mother simply stared at Peter, as if he were a stranger. Robert felt a sudden and overwhelming hollowness.

Robert had always prided himself on his practicality, his adherence to logic. This felt…absurd. He felt as if the ground had shifted beneath his feet. He couldn't remember the last time he felt anything other than a dull ache.

He retreated to the workshop in his garage. He spent hours sanding wood, the repetitive motion doing little to quell the rising tide of disquiet within him. The wood shavings, like his own life, accumulated uselessly on the floor.
