He'd started smoking again. Each cigarette was a small, self-destructive act, a burning symbol of his internal fire. The air was thick with smoke, a hazy curtain between him and the outside world. He sat by the window, watching the construction workers. Their focused efforts were a testament to something he couldn't grasp.

He thought of all the projects he had started and abandoned. The unfinished painting in the corner, the guitar gathering dust, the novel that remained a collection of fragmented ideas. He felt a profound sense of inadequacy, a deep, pervasive feeling of being… nothing.

The constant sounds of progress were a direct insult to his inertia. Each nail hammered, each board sawed, a physical manifestation of his own lack of movement. He stubbed out his cigarette, a dull ache settling in his chest.
