The renovation next door was nearing completion. The sounds had become less intrusive, replaced by the occasional hammering. He sat at his desk, staring at a blank screen. He had an important meeting scheduled for the following week, but he couldn't bring himself to prepare.

His mind was a tangled mess. He felt disconnected, detached from everything. The world outside his window was moving forward, but he felt stuck. He felt like a ghost, an observer in his own life.

He knew he should be doing something, anything, to break free from this state. He knew the building next door was being transformed, and he felt a pang of something he couldn't describe. He took a deep breath, and looked at the clock.
